Harry's first day

31 July

As you can see Harry is still not too big for his shovel (if he curls up tight).
He does have a comfy bed, but he does as he pleases - after all, he is a cat, and cats are masters of independence.
At present, he is trying out his teeth (and claws) on everything that moves - be it man or beast.  Luckily, our eldest cat (Jeoffrey) has learned to ignore him, therefore, Harry (mostly) leaves him alone - which leaves plenty of time to terrorise our other three boys.
Poor dears!
I don’t think I have seen anything move as quickly as our Harry!

6th August

Another new trick!

He loves biting my toes - toes and tales, they are not safe in our house.
Ben, our tabby - is finally starting to thaw and plays happily with Harry, until he (Ben) realises they are being observed - he then promptly hisses at Harry and runs away.
Last week, Harry ran up to Ben, put him in a headlock, grabbed his tale, and gave it a hug bite.
Poor Ben’s eyes nearly popped out of his head with
shock - he was certainly not amused.
To preserve our wallpaper and soft furnishings, our cats are not allowed in the lounge (unsupervised). However, sometimes they escape and wander about the house - (Thomas jumps up and kindly opens the door for them).
However, I came downstairs one day to find the cat room door wide open, and the only cat to escape was Harry. The rest stayed put, and were enjoying a bit of respite from Harry - intelligent cats.
The older Harry gets, the livelier our house becomes.

Little dumpling!

Whilst I am updating Harry’s diary, I can hear him charging about in the cats room next door - I cannot allow him in my office whilst I am busy, unless I want my work ruined and the wires removed from my PC - oh, and my toes bitten - and my pen stolen.
This week, he has been either fast asleep, or charging about at one hundred miles per hour - with no in
between. Wen he is charging around he looks like a blur and impossible to photograph.
He is jumping higher every day, and becoming more and more adventurous.  He loves to be in the garden - in my arms of course.  He sits quite happily with his mammy - (me), and watches life go by.  The birds and new noises are a wonder to little Harry.
Our blind cat Jeoffrey has been under the weather lately, so Harry has been lying with him a lot - which is a comfort to Jeoffrey.
Ben, our big fluffy tabby is playing more and more with Harry, and because Ben is so fluffy, he is Harry’s
favourite. Harry often has a mouthful of Ben’s hair in his mouth - poor Ben.
I think Harry is hungry (again) as he has jumped onto a plate to gain my attention - another bang, I am off to feed him.

Harry’s first Butterfly Sighting

I have to quickly mention about Harry and the butterfly.
This morning, a cabbage white butterfly had just hatched from a chrysalis, and it was looking for a place to dry its wings - in the sun. Harry and myself happened to be out in the garden enjoying the sunshine, and all of a sudden, the butterfly flew directly towards his mouth.
Well, I don’t know who got the biggest shock - the butterfly, Harry or myself.
I am ashamed to say I screamed, and the poor butterfly flew away in shock - at least it was safe from Harry.

Jeoffrey

Sadly, after fourteen years of love and devotion - last night, our eldest cat Jeoffrey died in his sleep,
peacefully, in front of the fire.
Thank you for your love “chicken” - we all miss you.

Squashing Grapes

Harry has been a little terror this week, jumping on Ben’s tail and biting it - but after a few choice words from Ben, they settle and play happily together - until the next bite that is.
My diet dictates that I eat lots of grapes, and Harry always pinches a few out of the box - he looks so cute running off with a black grape in his mouth.
However, I still get a shock when I stand on them - and at the time, I am so relieved to see I have just stood on a grape, and nothing worse, or alive.
Harry’s new trick is to fish dishwashing sponges from the washing bowl, and to catch drips from the tap.
He can nearly jump onto the benches, but not quite - so it won’t be long before the big cats lose their safe
haven.
I have just heard Peter laughing, and after investigating, I see Harry’s tail is soaking wet - it looks like a rats tail. Apparently his tail “fell” into the washing up bowl.
Harry seems unconcerned - and is very laid-back about it.

28th August

Four months two days old

Harry’s favourite toys are straws, cherry stalks, sponges, grapes and grape stalks - grapes are a particular
favourite, wrist watches (my Kahuna, because of the Velcro), cats tails, human toes, computer keyboards and cardboard boxes. It appears that like children - cats prefer the packaging that their toys arrive in, more then the toy.
We have a strange looking animal that is half cat half dog, Harry it seems, is permanently connected to Sacha’s fur - and she loves it.  However, she is a bit perplexed as he is either stationery or running at one hundred miles per hour, there is no in between.
Sacha has a plan though, she creeps very slowly towards Harry, hoping he will not notice her - but Harry is no fool, (he is after all a cat), and he darts off leaving poor Sacha bewildered, with her carefully thought out plan, in tatters.
It is a joy to watch Sacha and Harry running about the house, they love each other and are friends for life.
I am also pleased to say that our other cats, Ben (long fluffy tail), Jack (black) and Thomas (ginger terror), have fully accepted little Harry.
The little horror, is now on my desk, watching paper being printed - he used to be scared of the printer, but not any more - he wants to be inside it now.

3rd September

Harried by Harry

As you can see by the photo above, Harry and Ben are well acquainted - it seems the last cat to get used to our latest arrival, is now Harry’s favourite sparring partner.
Ben was the last addition before Harry, therefore he (naturally), was the most troubled - however, all is sweetness and (bitey) light now.

The North East of England suffered its biggest thunder and lightening storm in over thirty years this week, and Harry was a brave little soldier - even Sacha’s incessant barking did not faze him.

Harry’s favourite pastime at present - apart from playing with grapes, and jumping onto Ben - is to jump into the office litter bin and quickly remove (and shred) its contents - he will do it all day long if I let him, and because he is faster than the speed of light, he sneaks into the office all the time.

Harry has it made, he has Sacha (who adores him and plays for hours with him) and Ben, who allows him to hijack and tumble him constantly.  At the moment, Ben  still has a safe haven, (the tops of cupboards) but not for long.

11th September

As sick as a dog!

Earlier this week naughty little Harry ate too much of
his - and everyone else’s food, and as a consequence was as sick as a dog.  The good news for the big cats, was that after 2pm (on that day), they had a trouble free and relaxing day - happily watching Harry sleep it off.  They visibly relaxed and their sighs of relief were almost audible.
The following morning however, chaos resumed, and everyone was kept on their toes, whilst Harry made up for lost (bitey) time.

Ben (big fluffy tabby) is now instigating the play with Harry, and is happily jumping onto him - what a turnaround.
Peter, myself and Harry, enjoyed watching an X File
film earlier this week - with Harry sitting
(fascinated), in front of the TV for twenty minutes. Sacha of course, was fast asleep - The X Files is clearly not her cup of tea.

Harry can nearly jump onto the benches, he doesn’t quite get there because he is a bit wee, but the time is nigh - watch out big cats.
He is not too big for cuddles and and is very loving - purring loudly like a pneumatic drill while I carry him around - what a delight.

20th September

Bobbing for Grapes

Little Harry now pinches grapes from my bowl; using his teeth; the only problem now is he keeps losing them (grapes not teeth) - or they get squashed, and he returns for more grapes, leaving me with none. So I have to eat them quickly, or hide myself in a cupboard.
He has a routine, from 6. am until 9. am - every day, he runs around as fast as he can, jumping on everything that moves, or doesn’t move - biting everything that moves (man or beast), shredding everything in site, and when there is nothing left to shred, or bite, he falls asleep, exhausted. He sleeps peacefully for a couple of hours, then repeats the process, until bed time.

What a little whirlwind.

He is a fearless, robust little chap, and keeps us well amused.

Best Friends Ben and Harry

Harry still sleeps in his shovel, he loves it; however, as you can see - his shovel has competition - a bucket.
For some strange reason the bucket found its way to the windowsill, (much to Harry’s delight) and he was inside it in a nano second.  Ben - being a cat and very curious - couldn’t resist a good inspect, and he waited patiently for Harry to surface. When Harry eventually surfaced, Ben was inside the bucket for quite some time.
I snapped the picture when Harry popped up - I wonder what Ben is thinking as he is looking at Harry? As a famous English vet and author(James Herriot), once said, “If only they could talk”.

If only indeed.

James Herriot was born in (Sunderland), England, to English parents, and was brought up in Glasgow - Scotland.  Once he completed his university education, he spent the rest of his life working in North Yorkshire - England.

Harry has another new trick, he walks and runs
backwards
, quicker than he walks forward - I don’t know how he does it, but he is certainly unique.

He is in for a shock in a few months, he is going to visit our vet and have a small operation to remove the little extras tom cats have - permanently.
Au de parfum (of tom cat), is not my favourite perfume.
Bless his cotton socks, but he won’t feel a thing - honestly.
